The difference between winning and losing the battle that is cybersecurity is the ability to detect incidents before they blossom into larger issues, according to a Forbes report from contributor Richard Stiennon.
He said companies can generally be categorized as winners, losers or survivors when it comes to cyberthreats. A proactive approach to securing data, such as through the use of log monitoring tools, is the best way to be considered a winner.
"Every organization has a choice," Stiennon wrote. "They can become a victim of cyberattack and pay the cost of recovery, they can rely on quick reactions to changes in the threat space to ensure that they survive the next attack, or they can predict the next escalation in attacks and invest early in the defenses required to avoid ever becoming a victim."
Simply ignoring threats or relying on reactive measures is no longer enough to protect information, Stiennon said.
That line of thinking was reflected in a recent Information Management report, which also argued that companies should take a layered approach to securing information. One such layer should encompass early detection abilities to avoid data breaches completely, the report said.
