Expert: APTs are among top security threats

Many companies have familiarized themselves with advanced persistent threats during the past several months, which is a good thing considering they pose the most serious risk to information security today, according to a recent SC Magazine report.

Contributor Matt Ulrey, an industry expert, said both APTs and virtual environments will present organizations with the many challenges this year. Practicing security information and event management is one way to stop these threats.

"The information needed to detect attacks exists within the enterprise regardless of whether the attack is by an external party or an insider," the expert wrote. "Organizations that are not proactively collecting and analyzing this information lack the visibility needed to detect and respond to threats."

By failing to do so, companies run the risk of suffering  the widespread damage of APTs, which work by constantly attacking until a vulnerability is discovered.

Numerous reports have listed APTs among the attacks to watch for enterprise security this year. Earlier this month, a ZDNet report said both they and insider threats posed very high risks.
