Visa releases PCI compliance guidelines

Global payment card giant Visa recently released a set of guidelines meant to help merchants, card issuers and processes to achieve PCI compliance by improving the security of transactions. Specifically, the company's document addresses the need for chip technology.

"To provide guidance and help reduce complexity, cost and time-to-market, Visa has developed a set of recommended practices … in the process of planning, adopting and implementing chip technology programs in the U.S.," the document stated.

For one, the company encouraged organizations to be the early adopters of the technology to ensure they have the most updated security measures in place. Also, once it is implemented, Visa advised companies to adjust network and log monitoring programs, as well as risk management systems, accordingly to account for the changes.

However, Visa also noted that the guidelines were developed in general terms, and individuals may need to tweak them in order to support unique needs.

In identifying common PCI compliance mistakes, a recent Dark Reading report noted that companies often fail to properly track cardholder data flows. By tracking the information, they are better able to know who it comes in contact with, giving them a better chance of identifying the source of a data breach.
